Dear Jon, I would like to start your new topic of discussion with this great poem that uplifts our soul with a divine vibe:

    SAMADHI

Vanished the veils of light and shade,
    Lifted every vapor of sorrow,
Sailed away all dawns of fleeting joy,
    Gone the dim sensory mirage.
Love, hate, health, disease, life, death,
Perished these false shadows on the screen of duality.
Waves of laughter, scyllas of sarcasm, melancholic whirlpools,
Melting in the vast sea of bliss.
    The storm of maya stilled
By magic wand of intuition deep.
The universe, forgotten dream, subconsciously lurks,
Ready to invade my newly wakened memory divine.
I live without the cosmic shadow,
    But it is not, bereft of me;
As the sea exists without the waves,
But they breathe not without the sea.
Dreams, wakings, states of deep turiya sleep,
Present, past, future, no more for me,
    But ever-present, all-flowing I, I, everywhere.
    Planets, stars, stardust, earth,
    Volcanic bursts of doomsday cataclysms,
    Creation's molding furnace,
Glaciers of silent x-rays, burning electron floods,
Thoughts of all men, past, present, to come,
Every blade of grass, myself, mankind,
    Each particle of universal dust,
Anger, greed, good, bad, salvation, lust,
    I swallowed, transmuted all
Into a vast ocean of blood of my own one Being!
    Smoldering joy, oft-puffed by meditation
    Blinding my tearful eyes,
Burst into immortal flames of bliss,
Consumed my tears, my frame, my all.
Thou art I, I am Thou,
    Knowing, Knower, Known, as One!
Tranquilled, unbroken thrill, eternally living, ever new peace!
Enjoyable beyond imagination of expectancy, samadhi bliss!
    Not a mental chloroform
Or unconscious state without wilful return,
Samadhi but extends my conscious realm
Beyond the limits of the mortal frame
    To farthest boundary of eternity
    Where I, the Cosmic Sea,
Watch the little ego floating in me.
The sparrow, each grain of sand, fall not without my sight.
All space like an iceberg floats within my mental sea.
Colossal Container, I, of all things made.
By deeper, longer, thirsty, guru-given meditation
    Comes this celestial samadhi
Mobile murmurs of atoms are heard,
The dark earth, mountains, vales, lo! molten liquid!
Flowing seas change into vapors of nebulae!
Aum blows upon the vapors, opening wondrously their veils,
    Oceans stand revealed, shining electrons,
Till, at last sound of the cosmic drum,
Vanish the grosser lights into eternal rays
    Of all-pervading bliss.
From joy I came, for joy I live, in sacred joy I melt.
Ocean of mind, I drink all creation's waves.
Four veils of solid, liquid, vapor, light,
    Lift aright.
Myself, in everything, enters the Great Myself.
Gone forever, fitful, flickering shadows of mortal memory.
Spotless is my mental sky, below, ahead, and high above.
Eternity and I, one united ray.
A tiny bubble of laughter, I
Am become the Sea of Mirth Itself.

    hey, Jon,

what a fun topic. I look forward to hearing about your experiences.

re: Yogananda's Samadhi poem -- I remember that he mentioned wanting all of his students to memorize this poem, because it's a blue-print to spiritual experience. having read it just now, and reading a little between the lines of the actual words, wow. everything is there -- Maha Kali, Lord Shiva, The Cosmic Mother & Father, the dissolution of the five elements of creation, the purification of the gunas -- it is sublime. thanks for posting it, Daniel.

rather than verbalize a high divine experience directly, I thought I'd follow Yogananda's example, so beautifully posted by Daniel, and share a poem about the Mother Divine:

      AMMA

I have walked the ground where they made you, Mother
      whirling with dust & wind
      my mouth dry & pacing
the sound of your eternal hum in my ears
      whipping my mind into you
      whipping all minds into you
      melting all Mind.

I see all the whims you dropped onto the earth,
      forgotten like unimportant toys
when you picked up your weapons, Amma,
to go & fight the worst demons
that live in all of us now
      in towering battle
      & pure cosmic rage –

      your tongue blood-red
dripping rich with the element of soul’s passage,
of life & death & creation & more creation

& endless, infinite thirst to lick up
all the greed & selfishness of ignorant, shameful
      egoism
      that you can swallow
      in your great gaping gulps
      of ferocious love….

I used to wonder, “when are you coming for me?”
      dreaming
in meditative states of suspended excitement
      at reunion and half-fear,
dread that you wouldn’t love me
as much as I haven’t loved me
all these years in this body,
      making these mistakes,
      hurting innocence,
creating such chaos in the hearts & minds
of those I professed to love the most….

could I even see you, through the pile
the insurmountable pile of skulls & bones,
regrets & heartbreaks, looming between us?

      but then one night
      I met you face-on & knew you,
knew your high wild divine nature
as well as I know my own,

      your eyes glittering black diamonds
the light bouncing in all directions but once,
      just once,
      purely focused in mine
emblazoning your way into my soul
      for an eternity…

sure, I could hardly stand up,
a child, a real child in the hurricane,
      all the internal winds
of your impossible love swirling in my heart
      until
it was drunk with the Om,
drunk with the primordial sound of creation,
drunk with the swoop & shudder of you,
drunk & threatening to pass on or pass out
      limp at your feet
prone & mute before the very majesty
      of your silent thundering self…

      I came from You!

      did You ever begin?
there certainly could be no end!

      long-tongued & regal, plump & dark
like the most sacred night of my own life,
      the blackness of birth,
      the anguish of soul yearning,
      the endless sky against which
every star is just so much careless jewelry
scattered & sparkling like gems in a crown

oh, Mother, you are the crown of heaven,
the halo of stars, the galaxy in my heart

the fusion the knowing the depth the endless growing

in my soul you are in me now, Ma, & I am in you
& it has always been thus but for the fog,
the incredibly cloying velvet fog of forgetfulness
in whose cloth you wrapped me at birth
      & nursed me in loss
& fed me, alive, to the deaths of those I loved most,

& through which shimmering veil, now,
      grace of a pure tiger,

I can stand naked, wobbly on two feet

      & see you

      clearly

      through all of my eyes

      & know

      finally

in the wind of your breath
in the storm of your eyes
in the lightning of your touch
in the bones of my form
in the blood in my heart

      in all directions

      what it really means
      to come home.

So, I’d like to share here, the major positive and uplifting experience about my spiritual journey:
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My spiritual journey starts in a time where there was no time, and it is going to never end in the infinite, where the duality of the beginning and end, controlled by the so-called time does not exist.

Isn’t that great journey called life something amazing?

Isn’t that the greatest uplifting spiritual experience?

Isn’t that the most amazing spiritual journey that ever happens?

And you know the most beautiful and blissful thing on it? It is that we are all together in that same wonderful journey called LIFE.

          What a experience !!!! Isn’t it ?

          With eternal, love and joy

thanks so much for sharing those poems!

I knew about the Samadhi poem and have read it over the years, at times when I thought I needed that extra bit of inspiration.

            Just so incredibly powerful.

I remember once when looking at Yogananda's smile, his smile reminded me of my parents' loving smile to me. Like God had been smiling with love at me through them...maybe that Yogananda's smile made me realize that even ordinary people sometimes manifest the divine love.

Of course, with Yogananda's smile it is always perfectly pure and direct....and without any clouds obscuring anything...

do you guys remember the photo of Ananda Moyi Ma, from Autobiography of a Yogi, with her arm on Yogananda? So completely loving!

            Namaste brothers and sisters!
            Victory to the Divine!

              hi, guys--

yes, that photo of Ananda Moyi Ma & Yogananda is sublime. she's a great example of the Mother Divine's energy incarnated on the earth. she was a great divine soul.

there's also some great footage of Yogananda hanging out with Ramana Maharshi -- a few minutes on film. I'm sure you can find it on the net. the interesting thing there is the contrast in those two saints -- Yogananda was huge and flowing and animated, while Ramana was (at the time they met) in total silence, austere, almost naked, frail-looking. it's hilarious -- to me in that case Yogananda is a pure Shakti to Ramana's Shiva. it is sublime, seeing those two great saints and soul brothers in the same place at the same time.

thanks for your kind words. the direct experience is so ultimately important in this lifetime.
